185 girls raped in 4 months in Cambodia

By Phy • June 12th, 2008

Non-government Organization officials stated that within the period of four months from January to April 2008, 185 girls and women were raped, Kampuchea Thmey, one of the most leading Khmer language newspaper in Cambodia, reported today.

The figure is similar to that for the same period in 2007. Of the 185 rape victims, 13 were under five years of age, 22 aged between six and ten, 80 aged between 10 and 17, 70 aged over 18, it added.

The number is crazy big, isn’t it, with 1.5 person being raped every day in a country with the current population of about 14 million. Besides, it can be even bigger, i believe, as those happening but not reported are also many.

I wonder in what province they happened the most and the main reasons why they happened. They can help us think of ways to decrease the number.
