First 3 months of 08 marks Cambodia’s rise in traffic accidents

By Phy • July 8th, 2008

130 deaths and 551 injuries have been caused by traffic accidents alone in Cambodia during the first three months of 2008, according to a report Handicap International Belgium released last week, Cambodian Press Review (ed. 1,093, Jul 7, 08) cited the Mekong Times.

The number marks an increase in traffic accidents in the country, the Review wrote. It failed to report the number in 2007, though, and what the main reasons were for the accidents.

In its Five family members killed in traffic accident, the Review went, a Korean guy drove a Hyundai, drunk (most common cause, i think), and wrecked a motorbike the five family members were traveling on. Another common cause based on my experience as a Cambodian growing up in Cambodia, is drivers’ breach of traffic rules.

The number is scary.  In fact, i could recall from a report I read a long time ago that traffic accidents are the number one killer in Cambodia.

It’s a large cost for the economy. Traffic accident cause social lost for the country. Thanks for sharing.

That may also imply the failure of govt and NGO campaigns or programs. To me, a better law being adopted and its enforcement being effective would bring the number down. Anything else you think could help?
