New Thai FM appointed
With his first mission being the border row with Cambodia on Monday in Siem Reap, Tej Bunnag, former permanent secretary for foreign affairs, accepted PM Samak Sundaravej’s invitation to be named Foreign Minister of Thailand, a source told Bangkok Post today. No official nomination has been made, though.
Meanwhile, Chuan Leekpai, chief advisor of Thailand’s opposition Democrat Party and former Thai PM, on Saturday urged the govt to appoint a new Thai FM to amicably defuse the border tensions with Cambodia (Bangkok Post, Chuan urges govt to appoint …, 25 Jul 08).
“What might be raised first for the upcoming talks is the memorandum of understanding made by Thailand and Cambodia in 2000 on a plan to conduct a joint land demarcation. Settlement on the ongoing dispute could be achieved more quickly,” Mr. Chuan was cited as saying.
