New Thai FM to be nominated for Monday talks, Cambodia optimistic
Thailand would appoint a new Foreign Minister for the border talks next Monday in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Thai PM Samak Sundaravej announced after presiding at a press conference to declare Thailand’s assuming the ASEAN chairmanship Friday afternoon, according to Xinhua today.
“I strongly hope that the foreign minister-level meeting at Siem Reap will score positive outcome,” Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Nam Hong said after meeting with the ambassadors of the five member countries of the UN Security Council (Xinhua, Cambodian FM optimistic …, 25 Jul 08).
Meanwhile, security has been tightened for the safety of Thai businesses in Cambodia, Bangkok Post reported today. “This is a political problem, so civilians should not be involved or suffer,” govt spokesman Khieu Kanharith told reporters by telephone. “We have security in place and Thailand has also advised its citizens through the embassy.”
As SMS’s are being spread among Cambodians, he also urged Cambodians not to boycot Thai products, saying it’s just counter-productive.
