Border disagreement surfaces
Thailand insisted the use of a different map drawn with US assistance while accepting the ICJ ruling in favor of Cambodia in 1962, according to AP Jul 24. Cambodia, on the other hand, argued the legitimate map is the one drawn by the French in 1907. Why Thailand thinks the US assisted map should be used in the demarcation of the border was not reported.
UN emergency meeting canceled pending another round of bilateral talks
Thai PM Samak Sundaravej told reporters that he talked to his Camboidan counterpart PM Hun Sen and both sides agreed to meet again to resolve the spat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, next Monday—just one day after the general elections. (AP, CNN, BBC, Xinhua, The Earth Times)
Govt spokesman Khieu Kanharith said Cambodia has agreed to “postpone the complaint to the Security Council,” according to AP.
“We have cancelled the meeting pending the bilateral talks,” said Ambassador Le Luong Minh of Vietnam, which is holding the rotating council presidency for July (The Earth Times). Meanwhile, the planned meeting will still be convened, if necessary, council members told reporters.
“The announcement would seem to be a small diplomatic victory for Thailand, which had rejected Cambodian requests to involve the U.N. and the grouping of Southeast Asian nations in the matter,” AP wrote.
Asian security talks dominated by Cambodia-Thailand bitter border quarrel
AFP reported the Cambodia-Thailand territorial dispute has concerned the 27-nation ASEAN Security Forum that featured Southeast Asian countries as well as the United States, Russia and the European Union.
