Context

Supply chain and social compliance work generates valuable data, but the reporting is often dense and difficult to absorb. Tchibo’s WE Program focuses on human rights and improving working conditions in supplier factories through dialogue and rights awareness.

This publication aimed to make the work legible and meaningful to a global audience by connecting metrics to human experience.

The problem

Compliance and sustainability communications can fail when:

  • metrics are accurate but emotionally flat, so stakeholders disengage
  • insights are fragmented across reports, making the narrative hard to follow
  • human impact is implied rather than shown
  • the content is “technically correct” but not memorable or actionable

Goals

  1. Translate compliance and sustainability information into a clear, engaging narrative
  2. Preserve accuracy while making the content accessible to non-specialists
  3. Build a publication structure that can carry both evidence and lived experience
  4. Produce a durable asset usable for global stakeholder communication

Constraints

  • Sensitive domain: human rights, labor conditions, and compliance require careful framing
  • Risk of oversimplifying complex issues
  • Need to balance storytelling with reporting discipline and credibility

What I did

1) Defined the narrative strategy

  • Established an editorial throughline that could connect disparate compliance themes into a coherent arc
  • Chose a human-centered approach, using stories and dialogue to carry the meaning behind the data

2) Built the publication structure (information architecture)

  • Designed sections and recurring elements so readers could scan, orient, and go deeper
  • Balanced “story” pages with “context” pages to keep it both engaging and grounded

3) Translated compliance data into reader-ready language

  • Converted abstract metrics into plain-language explanations and implications
  • Kept language precise and defensible while making it readable for global stakeholders

4) Produced the longform publication

  • Initiated and produced the final longform publication (147 pages) as a cornerstone communication asset
  • Ensured consistency of tone, clarity, and narrative integrity across the full piece

Deliverables

  • Narrative and editorial strategy
  • Publication structure and section blueprint
  • Stakeholder-ready longform manuscript
  • Final produced publication

Results (high level)

  • Delivered a longform publication that made compliance and sustainability work more understandable and engaging for non-specialist stakeholders
  • Created a durable storytelling format that supports ongoing sustainability and human rights communication

Skills demonstrated

Data storytelling, content strategy, editorial architecture, corporate communications, compliance communication, stakeholder messaging, narrative design, risk-aware writing.

What I’d do next in the first 30–90 days (in a Web Strategy or Enablement role)

  • Convert the publication into a modular content system (web hub + chapter pages + stakeholder summaries)
  • Create a “1-page executive brief” and “2-minute read” versions for different audiences
  • Add measurable engagement signals (download CTA tracking, section-level heatmap, feedback loop)
  • Build a quarterly refresh workflow so reporting and narrative stay current
